There's a problem with teeth whitening that no one is talking about.

We are told that oxidizing the inside of our body should be avoided by eating foods high in antioxidants or by taking anti-oxidant supplements.

Yet, typical, cheap, teeth whitening products use the method of oxidation to whiten teeth.

WHY ARE WE OXIDIZING OUR TEETH?

"How whitening gels work: Hydrogen peroxide penetrates the enamel and releases oxygen and hydroxyl radicals which then oxidizes the large stain molecules. This oxidation breaks down the stain molecules and converts them into much smaller structures, making the tooth appear whiter. " - Burst Oral Care

Teeth are affected by oxidation just like the inside of our body is.

Teeth Are Affected By Oxidizing Whiteners - Enamel on teeth is different depths depending on the area of the tooth. The sides and front of teeth are the most common areas oxidized and have the thinnest enamel.

Oxidizing Breaks Down The Surface - Bleaching of any surface or material breaks it down over time. Teeth are no different. Repeated use of oxidizing products on top of enamel take their toll.

Enamel is affected by oxidation.

It's easy to see in the photo that tooth enamel nearer to the gum line is thinner than the top of the tooth. Cavities at the gum line are common, especially as we age. Enamel thins, exposing the dentin made of many tiny fluid-filled tubules which send pain signals to the dental pulp.

Consistent Whitening Weakens The Surface

Thinner enamel is more susceptible to cavities and also tooth sensitivity.

Regular Toothpaste Damages Teeth and Gums

The dental industry admits that toothpaste is harmful to teeth and gums.

______________

Hey Friends!

Charcoal has been around as a helpful and healing substance for a very long time. Used for preserving mummies, wood and water, charcoal has also been used for a number of ailments and has been recorded in hundreds of treatments throughout the centuries.

In our day, doctors, paramedics and medical centers use activated charcoal in a number of different ways. The benefits of charcoal are well documented in numerous medical journals.

Of course I had to formulate an oral care product incorporating activated charcoal. After all, charcoal was used as a tooth whitener over 100 years ago, and it works just as well today! But you don't want to brush regularly with straight activated charcoal as it can be too abrasive to use over long periods of time.

Speaking of whitening teeth...have you ever wondered how those whitening gels work? It's important to know.

Hydrogen peroxide penetrates the enamel and releases oxygen and hydroxyl radicals which then oxidizes the large stain molecules which breaks down the stain molecules and converts them into much smaller structures, making the tooth appear whiter. - (adapted from Burst.com)

Oxidation is a chemical reaction that can produce free radicals, thereby leading to chain reactions that may damage the cells of organisms in the body.

Always take care of your teeth, they were meant to last a lifetime!

P.S. Who hasn't heard about the need for anti-oxidants in the body? We find it a curiousity that it's okay to oxidize the teeth with whitening gels but we should avoid oxidation on the inside of our bodies. Teeth are not dead bones or like marble that you can just pour on bleach and take care of stains. Teeth are alive. Food for thought!
