microgreens

It has been a few months since the Fukashima disaster and no one is talking much about it anymore. People in my community are completely OBLIVIOUS to what happened and when they hear me say that I don't want to allow my children to eat fish anymore they say, "Oh, because of the radiation?" (as if they have some super shield around their home that protects them from it). 

I get odd looks because I am the "paranoid" one who has a closet of emergency food and supplies. I appear to be over the top because I started urban farming with the intent of trying to grow on and live off of my very small piece of land.

After I told others that Europe was (4/11/2011) advising pregnant mums to stop drinking milk and to avoid eating large leafy vegetables, they are silent. I then ask, "What are you going to do about food and your children?" They are silent after that too. 

I may be farming now and enjoying my chickens every day but I have not forgotten about Fukishima and the destruction. Those people that get cancer from this in the future months and years will just fade into the masses that are already being diagnosed daily. The leaders hope the memory of Japan's nuclear disaster will all fall away so they can get back to the business of what they do. 

EVERYTHING, absolutely EVERYTHING is contaminated now. There isn't anyone or anything that is not being affected by this. 
 
Infant mortality rates have increased 35% in the Pacific Northwest since the Fukushima meltdowns! Is anybody paying attention?
 
Organic farms and livestock are affected too so even though they are not being raised with pesticides or GMO food, they are still contaminated from the environment. 

The chickens are growing on this urban farm and two are now laying eggs and their eggs are contaminated, unfortunately. But at least I know what these chickens are eating (besides radioactive particles and cesium, which is the real problem and what they don't want you to think about). 

After much thought I came up with a plan of action for my family when it came to food. I know how important greens are and since large leafy greens are exposed to more contamination, I needed to cultivate greens in the shortest amount of time so that they would not be exposed to too much toxicity.

I figured that "MicroGreens" would be the best thing to grow under these troubling environmental circumstances. Greens are vital for healthy teeth and gums and we must all get them in somehow. I believe homegrown MicroGreens are one answer to avoid eating contaminated greens.

MicroGreens are not sprouts nor are they baby vegetables. The MicroGreens I am speaking of are young plants that have sprouted "true leaves". They grow in approximately 14-21 days, in soil and the sun, and they harvest quickly. 

What I prefer about these type of MicroGreens is that they are grown in the SUN and the SOIL. Sprouts are grown in the dark and without soil so they are not as appealing to me.
 
There is also the "anti-sprout propaganda" raging in the media right now but I will save my comments about that for another post. It will suffice to say that I know first hand that migrant field workers do not have adequate bathroom facilities and they are forced to defecate in the fields. Can anyone say "e-coli"?

Greens grown in the sun or light have a different energy in them and I believe they are more vital and healthier. MicroGreens be grown indoors, in the window or under a grow light.

THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SPROUTS AND MICROGREENS

Sprouts:  
1. Grown in the dark, in moisture, no soil needed
2. Harvested before plant sprouts "true leaves"
Benefits: Nutritious, easy and quickest harvest (3-7 days)

MicroGreens:  
1. Grown in the sunlight, in biodynamic soil with compost tea
2. Harvested after plant has sprouted true leaves
Benefits: More nutritious, distinct and unique plant taste, quick harvest (14-21 days)

The goal is to eat tasty and nutritious GREENS that have not been exposed to environmental toxins and MicroGreens are one answer to the "large green leafy contaminated vegetable" problem.

MicroGreens are all the rage for gourmet chefs and their true leaves give them a distinct and subtle taste that delights the palate. Plants this young are densely loaded with nutrients too so toss them with a dressing and viola, you have a tasty salad for your entire family that is loaded with vitamins and minerals and grown with the least amount of contamination. 

I plan on combining the MicroGreens with the eggs and other vegetables that I am growing in two greenhouses and indoor growing systems. This is 'real' food that will insure real health in the difficult times ahead. 
 
This is the future and it is here right now.

I have been a fan of Dr. Bach remedies for a few years and I can't think of a better time to review them than right now.

Years ago I worked with thousands of people, trying to help them achieve a healthier lifestyle. Some were just overweight while others were very sick and overweight.

Then and Now

The latest update on the radiation situation reminded me of something that one of the Sages said thousands of years ago.

In the ancient of days R’ Chanina said:

The son of David will not come until a fish will be sought for a sick person, and it will not be found…

Today, Michael Friedlander, a U.S. based nuclear engineer, told CNN: “That’s the one [cesium] I am worried about. Plankton absorbs the cesium, the fish eat the plankton, the bigger fish eat smaller fish – so every step you go up the food chain, the concentration of cesium gets higher.”

Michael’s comments struck me because I remembered what R’ Chanina had said.

There will come a time when a sick person would need to eat and they wouldn’t be able to because no fish could be found.
Or maybe R’ Chanina meant that fish will be so contaminated that a sick person would not be able to eat it.

In any case, the glaring reality of what is happening cannot be denied. Our water was polluted even before this happened and now it is going to get worse.
Be prepared and say your prayers.

Radiation Prevention by Dr. Bond

Those that are currently eating an organic and whole foods diet and complementing with vitamins, minerals and superfoods are already ahead of the game.

Concentrate on choosing and eating the most densely nutritious foods you can get because this is what you will need to do to protect yourself from the possible exposure coming from Japan.

As always, your food will be your medicine.

The Great Indicator

Past history is a great indicator of what could happen in the future.

We can usually count on the past to give us an idea of how an individual or group will respond to a particular situation.

It makes sense to look back to see how disasters were handled by our government, wouldn't you agree?

Think for yourself and if the advice given appears to be unsound, it probably is.

Tweets From Down Under

This story was told to me as being a true one and not a fable.

Over two hundred years ago there was a baby bird who had fallen out of its nest. When she hit the ground she broke a wing. She was young, helpless and now handicapped and her mother was no where in sight.

A cow happened to walk by and dropped a cow pie… and it landed directly on top of the little bird. The pie covered the poor bird completely. The little bird was not visible at all but began chirping like crazy!

A farmer then rode by on his horse and suddenly heard consistent and rapid bird chirping… but it sounded like it was coming from the ground. He stopped and got off his horse to see where all the happy tweets were coming from. He looked around with a puzzled look on his face and then realized that the chirping was coming from underneath a rather large cow pie about 3 feet away.

The farmer put on his latex gloves (oh, maybe they didn't have those 200 years ago…) and uncovered the bird from underneath the pie. He rushed the bird home and cleaned it off well, he fed it and nurtured it until the wing was healed. The farmer became very fond of the little bird.

The farmer was bothered by one thing though. From the moment the bird was removed from the cow pie, it stopped chirping happily. The farmer couldn't understand why because he did the best he could to help the bird recover. But the bird never chirped. Not even once.

One day a holy Sage happened to come through the farmer's town. This Sage had a special gift which was communicating with animals. He had the wisdom that enabled him to speak to them and understand what they were saying. The farmer asked the Sage to come to his farm and talk to the little bird to see why she stopped chirping.

The Sage went to the farm and asked the bird what happened. "Why did you stop chirping? The farmer rescued you from the dung and took care of you and helped you to recover. Why don't you ever chirp now and why were you chirping so happily while under the dung?" asked the Sage.

The bird replied "I was all alone in the world with no one to help me. I fell out of my nest and was cold and miserable and didn't know if I would ever feel comfort again. Then, all of sudden, a lovely and warm mass enveloped my body. I was completely covered with this mass and I was snug and felt protected and safe. Then, the farmer comes and takes me out of my comfort zone and my warm place, and rinses all of it off and puts me in this nice and clean environment. Why should I be chirping now? It was so nice before, and I was so warm and cozy and comfortable where I was."

This story is relevant today because so many don't understand that they too are living underneath a cow pie and find it quite comfortable. Too many are blinded by the mass and the masses are blind.

Rinsing off the mass (mess) leaves us vulnerable and sometimes we might think that it's better to be back underneath the dung than to face the challenges and growth that lie ahead.

It is easy to become comfortable with unhealthy things and places.
