Let’s talk about essential oils, shall we?
I always think of essential oils firstly as “man’s first medicine”. That’s what essential oils are – powerful, super concentrated oils that are natural, but also medicinal.
Essential oils are powerful because depending on which one you are using they can be antiviral, antifungal, antimicrobial and antibacterial.
Essential oils are wonderful, but they are not free from side effects, just like other medicines are not free from side effects.
Essential oils should NEVER be taken straight. They always have to be diluted and be a very small percentage of the formula, sometimes .001%. A little goes a long way as they are concentrated medicines.
Some essential oils cannot be taken internally, but can still be used in the mouth. One example is clove bud essential oil. It is used in dentistry on dry sockets and a painful tooth and it works well. It is an essential oil but also a medicine. The following is a portion of the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for clove bud essential oil:
CHEMICAL NAME. DEFINITION/BOTANICAL ORIGIN: Eugenia caryophyllus Bud Oil is an essential Oil steamed distilled from the dried flower buds of the Clove.

This MSDS sounds frightening, doesn’t it? Yet this essential oil is used in the mouth regularly with success.
Here is another MSDS from a natural and organic ingredient we all use, many of us daily:

This MSDS is for… ORGANIC EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL.
Almost all MSDS’s sound scary, no matter what the ingredient.
But that doesn’t mean we can take essential oils lightly. That MSDS speaks the truth.
Essential oils are super-concentrated for a reason. It takes several pounds of plant material to make just one ounce of essential oil. We would never be able to eat enough of a plant to get that much oil naturally.
Essential oils are super concentrated and powerful and that’s why they work, but there can be side effects, depending on how much one is exposed and there have even been fatalities associated with essential oils.
Adults or children that drank a half cup or more of straight essential oils did die or end up with serious health complications. Why and where they had access to so much essential oil is not clear, but they drank it and the American Association of Poison Control Centers’ Annual Reports of National Poison Data Systems (NPDS) records all of it.
We want to think that we would never drink that much essential oil. We do know better. But children do not – if you have small, cute, colorful little bottles of essential oils sitting around they need to be locked up.
The day after I wrote this post I was in my local grocery store and happened to notice the essential oil display. Of all natural products on display, the essential oils were the items that were low or out of stock.
Essential oils are awesome when used in moderation. The essential oils in Tooth Soap® and our other formulas are extremely diluted – so much so a few customers complain they are not flavored enough. Trust me, there is just the right amount of essential oil in Tooth Soap®. A tiny amount of Tooth Soap® is used, the formula is then diluted further with water and saliva and then the mouth is rinsed after that.
Yet, some customers still want MORE flavor, more essential oils. I resist because I think long term. I remember we brush our teeth approximately 57,000 times in our life (if we are blessed to live a long life).
The dental industry has done a smashing job of convincing the consumer that they need a super strong, artificially sweet taste in their mouth to feel clean. I like to remind everyone that clean has NO SMELL.
We love to scent everything in the USA, from our bodies to our carpets to our water. But please know that pure and no scent is quite lovely too. 😀
Pure Tooth Soap®, without any essential oils, removes plaque and softens tartar, making it easier to remove. The essential oils are a bonus and a treat for the tongue. Essential oils take care of critters big time. But it is pure, natural and organic soap that is the king here. It is soap’s wetting ability that takes critters on a slip and slide and out of your mouth. Pure Tooth Soap® rocks!
With my routine, I like to go totally BARE some days. The only essential oils I am exposed to regularly are through Tooth Soap®. I don’t use lotions so much except for the Coffee Butter Hand Dream™ (now back in stock in a handy ECO container) and there are no essential oils in that. I do not slather products with essential oils on my body regularly. Maybe Sweet Scent™ or Buzz OFF! if I need it, but I have always been moderate with essential oils knowing how powerful and concentrated they are.
On those days when I go bare, I use any of the Plain Jane products with ZERO essential oils. I give my body a break from any chemicals, natural or not, and just get a good old-fashioned clean of my teeth and gums.
CLEAN HAS NO SMELL. GO PLAIN JANE.
