Two years before Y2K happened I had a 3 month supply of food and a 6 week supply of water ready for my family of four point five people.
My husband at the time had a daughter who was with us every other week, so I needed partial supplies for her too, in case the impending disaster were to actually take place.
None of my friends were prepared and they didn’t believe that Y2K was going to cause problems.
I had my doubts though, so I purchased all the basic survival tools and was ready for the worse case scenario. I have always believed that everyone should have an emergency supply of food because we just never know what could happen. The Y2K deal just pushed me to put it together.
On the evening of December 31st, 1999, I filled all the sinks and bathtubs with water, to add to my water arsenal in the garage.
I remained calm because I was prepared. If I am prepared in my mind first, and then take action to prepare for the physical part, I am good to go. I do all I can and then I put the rest in the hands of the Creator.
Dick Clark began counting down and then the clock struck midnight… and all the computers remained working and our electricity kept the lights shining bright.
I was actually relieved that all was well and that nothing materialized. I was glad I could drain the water from all the tubs and sinks.
Let’s face it, the end of the world has an ugly and dark feeling attached to it, so nobody really wants to be a part of it, even if they have done all the preparedness ahead of time.
Y2K was a semi-HOAX in my opinion. I say “semi” because a hoax is actual deception and I don’t believe that there was intended deception in the Y2K movement. But there were some charlatans taking advantage of the situation and that is par for the course with pretty much anything that generates revenue.
All of us that were involved in Y2K preparedness planning were serious about what we were doing. I believe the companies selling the supplies were all prepared themselves. Sure, there were scammers because there always will be, but for the most part, those involved in end time preparedness are serious people who want to survive and they are not about deception. In fact, they are the ones that can see through the deception and that is why they are involved in preparedness in the first place!
The weirdest part about Y2K was that almost no one commented on the fact that it never materialized! Why wasn’t anyone talking about it? The web was buzzing with Y2K before midnight in 1999, and then after the clock struck twelve, no one spoke of it anymore.
Y2K ended up being nothing more than “two letters and a number” but it fueled an entire industry and made a nice living for many.
It is now 11 years later and the Fukushima disaster has caused a major frenzy in the preparedness and survival retail establishments. Some online retailers are posting notices that say there will be a “160 day delay” in shipment of food in #10 cans.
Getting my survival arsenal together again has been pressing on me these last few months, even before Fukushima. It’s what caused me to start the Tooth Soap® Urban Farm. What happened in Japan with the nuclear reactors just made everything more real and made it more of a priority.
It is always good to be prepared and since I was a Girl Scout growing up, it’s natural for me to always think 10 steps ahead.
I have been putting my survival arsenal together again these past few months and will share what I am doing through upcoming posts. This time it is different because I believe that the Victory Garden is the only way we will survive in the future.
It is “US” versus Monsanto and our battle will take place in the ground or in a pot or in a plant bed.
Living off of canned and dried food 100% is not my idea of really living so I am growing crops and getting to know the ins and outs of how to maintain a healthy garden. My intent is to combine survival foods (dry, canned) with fresh produce and eggs, plus SUPER foods that are dense in nutrients.
If things got ugly the most important thing we can do is keep our immune systems STRONG. This can be done through proper nutrition and superfoods that are now available with a 3-7 year shelf life.
Stay tuned and join me as I start sharing what I am preparing for the future.
Always remember that today is the first day of the rest of your life. Prepare, prepare, prepare.
